State Street Springfield, MA
Owner: MADOT, District 2
Project Value: $17.0 M
General Contractor: Palmer Paving Corp
The State Street corridor is approximately 3.2 miles and is one of the major east-west roadways in the City of Springfield. Along this thoroughfare are businesses, residences, parks, cultural amenities, education institutions and historical assets. Throughout the project our team remained focused on addressing the needs of the public, executing special care in all worksite areas and especially near historical sites.
The state street corridor project included the reconstruction of several intersections, the upgrade and coordination of the existing traffic signal systems, intersection and roadway improvements aimed to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety. Also included were streetscape improvements – tree plantings, benches and lighting) throughout the corridor. Wheelchair ramps were constructed to meet current ADA and AAB standards.
Unclassified excavation, cold planing, full depth hot mix asphalt pavement, minor modifications to the drainage and water system, granite curb, pavement markings signs, reconstruction of existing traffic signal system, landscaping and other incidental work as performed. Strong project management skills were required and utilized on a daily basis. Coordinating with a multitude of specialty contractors working simultaneously and tacking issues around variable sub base conditions were high priority concerns for our team.
Working with MADOT officials and Department of Public works officials from Springfield, traffic and day time work schedule constraints were easily addressed.
